Event Type

During a presidential election year, Colorado has two different primary election dates. The primary elections allow Colorado affiliated and unaffiliated voters to select their presidential and congressional choices to move forward to the final Election Day ballots, sort of like a sports bracket.

Registered Colorado Democrat and Republican voters will receive their party’s respective ballots either by mail or at the polls depending on when they register to vote. Unaffiliated voters will receive primary ballots from both parties but can only submit one of the ballots for their vote to count.

Colorado’s two party primary election dates are:

March 5: Colorado’s “Super Tuesday” presidential primary election. Polling stations will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and ballot drop boxes will remain open until 7 p.m., though voters will begin to receive their ballots in the mail in February. Each party’s choice for president will move on to the state’s November ballot.

June 25: Colorado’s party primary election will decide who represents their party for a variety of congressional, statehouse and local elected positions. Polling stations will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and ballot boxes open until 7 p.m., with ballots mailed earlier in June.
